Frozen Pipes

- How to Avoid Them

Aside from the usual precautions:

  • insulate water pipes
  • insulate hot water heaters
  • insulate water meter assemblies
  • keep indoor temperatures well above freezing
  • drip faucets during extremely cold temperatures
  • know the location of the water shut-off for your property in advance of needing it

There is another important issue that may not have occurred to you.

If you have a programmable thermostat with battery backup or a remote battery-operated temperature sensor that reports to the thermostat controlling your furnace or boiler, you must keep the batteries fresh. The recommendation is that you replace your batteries annually, or any time you will be away from your home for a month or more.
